Linux History
- A few commercial Linux existed for i386 systems. Usually very expensive
Linux History
- Fall 1991 Linux v0.02 pre-pre-alpha released on usenet in October
- Read Just for Fun to learn the real story of Linux
- Linus wanted a terminal to connect into college computers
- Wrote it. Then looked to see how close he was to having a full OS.
- About 80% complete.
- He ordered the POSIX API Manuals from the USA and waited.

F/LOSS
What is "F/LOSS"?
- Free
- Libre
- Open Source Software
Like a Free Beer Recipe
Proper F/LOSS loves it when:
- you share the recipe (every kindergartener was taught to share)
- recipe is "free"
- others take the recipe and make it better / fix problems
- nobody gets sued
- then they share it back (this is important)
!
- everyone is free to get a copy of the recipe
- if the first guy gets tired, someone else picks up beer recipe maintenance
- everyone gains from better BEER!
Unlike Commercial or just OSS
- Hide the recipe
- Sue anyone who tries to fix things
- Sue anyone who tries to make it better
- Clients can only come to 1 place to get updates
- Some source code is semi-open.
Next Steps
- Practice at home
- Go over each objective a few times
- Keep showing up.
- Ask questions on the ALE-Study email list ; that is what it is for!
- Help others if you can. Teaching others solidifies YOUR learning too.
- There is a Servers discussion group on meetup
